In 2018, a public project transforming Haian Road was launched in hopes of creating a person-centred environment in Tainan, Taiwan. The neighbourhood on Haian Road and Zhong- zheng Road are rich in cultural heritage. The prosperity of this area has been dwelling over time. To bring back the past glory of this area, a design competition was organized. MVRDV, a global operating architecture practice, has been engaged to re-planning Haian and the nearby neighbourhood. The planning transformed the West Central District and nearby Haian Road into a barrier-free area where people can walk. The creation of public spaces and plazas offer places for people to relax and enjoy their leisure time. The planning was completed in 2018 and the further project “STREET MUSEUM OF ART+” begins. Together with the STREET MUSEUM OF ART+ project, dozens of outstanding artists have been invited to design installation art working along Haian Road and Zhongzheng Road based on the following two themes: “Sounds of the city” and “Runway of the city - Light up Taiwan Zhongzheng Road”. Through the integration of elements such as sound, light and rhythms, the artworks have interactive qualities that present visitors with deeper experiences.
We use cables to create artworks and bring them to Haian Road to help people understand the history of Haian. Cables, often hidden, connect private living spaces and public spaces. We use wire, rolled into five layers of concentric spheres. The work is installed between two ventilation towers so that people can feel the weight of the “memory ball”.
